Commericial Facades As Architect for the Town of Norwoods Commercial Facade Improvement Program, Gienapp Design is designing exterior improvements for several of the downtown buildings. The scope of work for 705-721 Washington Street includes replacement of 8 of the 9 existing storefronts (one was recently replaced). Store entrances were relocated in order to widen and recess the doors to provide the clearances required by the current accessibility codes. At the entrances, the floor is reconstructed to remove the existing steps for wheelchair access. The project includes new glazing, wood framed spandrels over the storefronts and masonry spandrels below the windows. A consistent treatment of awnings, signs and exterior lighting unify the facade. The project includes restoration and repair of the original cast stone on the street facades. Through funds made available by a Community Block Grant, the Town pays one-half of the project cost. The Owner pays the other one-half of the cost. Since the project is partially funded with state funds, the design required approval of the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Construction labor is subject to Davis Bacon wage rates. The design and construction processes were coordinated to allow continuous occupancy of the stores throughout the construction period. |
